ProBiora® at Delmar Family Dental: Support a Healthier Oral Environment
Brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings are still the foundation of a healthy smile—but there’s growing interest in an additional “support layer”: oral probiotics. ProBiora® is a dental probiotic mint designed to help rebalance the bacteria in your mouth by replenishing beneficial strains that can compete with (and help crowd out) the bacteria associated with cavities and gum inflammation. Ask our team for a sample at your next visit.
ProBiora products use a patented blend called ProBiora3®, which contains three strains of Streptococcus (S. oralis KJ3®, S. uberis KJ2®, and S. rattus JH145®). The concept is “replacement” or “competitive” ecology: introduce helpful, naturally occurring oral bacteria so they can better occupy the surfaces of teeth and gums—making it harder for harmful bacteria to dominate.
According to the manufacturer, ProBiora is intended to support gum and tooth health and help reduce factors related to cavities, gingivitis, bleeding gums, and oral biofilm. (As with most probiotic supplements, these statements are not evaluated by the FDA, and the product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease.)
Cavities and gum disease aren’t only about sugar or brushing technique—they’re also about the bacterial balance in the mouth. Scientific reviews note that certain probiotic strains may help reduce oral pathogens and support oral health, but strain selection matters because not all probiotics have documented benefits in the oral cavity. That’s one reason ProBiora3 stands out as a blend specifically studied for dental use.
In periodontal care specifically, clinical research has evaluated a tablet containing the same three ProBiora3 strains as an adjunct after scaling and root planning (deep cleaning), exploring potential benefits alongside standard periodontal therapy.
Many patients consider ProBiora if they’re focused on prevention, have a history of frequent cavities, notice gum irritation, or want extra support between visits. The tablets are designed to dissolve slowly in the mouth—often used after brushing, commonly at bedtime—so the beneficial bacteria have time to interact with teeth and gum tissue.
If you have dairy sensitivities, note that some ProBiora formulations may contain trace milk proteins from fermentation (label details vary by product)
Think of ProBiora as a supportive add-on, not a replacement for routine care. The biggest wins still come from consistent home hygiene and professional maintenance—especially regular cleanings that remove plaque and tartar buildup.
